not sure which behavior should be expected, but this is a sensible
solution.
The removal of the EXIT file is hardly needed: the code removes it
anyway
before stopping, so the likelihood that a leftover EXIT file may
cause an
unexpected stop is quite small.
About sending signal to the code: good in theory, a portability hell
in practice.
The EXIT file is not elegant but it always works (sort of)
